The SMPP protocol is divided into five main sections:

Message Transfer: This section defines the core functionality of SMPP, including the transfer of SMS messages between SMSCs and ESMEs.

Message Processing: This section defines the processing of SMS messages, including message formatting, message routing, and message prioritization.

Message Enquiry: This section defines the mechanisms for inquiring about the delivery status of SMS messages, including delivery receipts and message delivery reports.

Session Management: This section defines the procedures for establishing, maintaining, and terminating a session between an SMSC and an ESME.

Security: This section defines the security mechanisms for protecting SMPP traffic, including authentication, encryption, and message integrity checks.

Message Transfer: Message Transfer contains the message transmission commands and responses that are used to exchange SMS messages between SMSCs and ESMEs. This section includes commands for submitting SMS messages, delivering SMS messages, and cancelling SMS messages.

Message Processing: Message Processing contains the procedures for processing SMS messages, including message routing, message prioritization, and message concatenation. This section includes procedures for handling message encoding, message decoding, and message formatting.

Message Enquiry: Message Enquiry contains the procedures for inquiring about the delivery status of SMS messages. This section includes procedures for delivering delivery receipts and delivery reports, as well as procedures for requesting the status of previously submitted messages.

Session Management: Session Management contains the procedures for establishing, maintaining, and terminating a session between an SMSC and an ESME. This section includes procedures for negotiating the protocol version, authentication, and session termination.

Security: Security contains the security mechanisms for protecting SMPP traffic. This section includes mechanisms for authentication, encryption, and message integrity checks. It also includes procedures for verifying the authenticity of SMPP messages and protecting the confidentiality of SMPP traffic.
